How Students Develop Employability Skills
At the British School of Bucharest, students are prepped and ready to tackle the world. Covering careers, enterprise and work experience, students develop employability skills that set them up for the world of work, with a strong knowledge of options that are available to them post-education. We do this by implementing a variety of schemes throughout the different Key Stages.
The Gatsby Benchmarks sets out eight strands that support schools in providing the best education, information, guidance, advice and support for students. These allow us to plan a programme to help our students in the best way we can.
The eight benchmarks are:

By using these benchmarks, the British School of Bucharest ensures that the students develop a range of employability skills.

In Key Stage 3 (Year 7-9), students will have the opportunity to access materials in the library aims to inspire them to choose the right qualifications for their own future careers. An Enterprise Day for each year group is held during the summer term, after exams, where the students can engage in group projects, to produce varying outcomes and overcome challenges. These could include 'The Sandwich Project', 'Dragon's Den' or 'Small Business'.
In Key Stage 4 (Year 10 & 11) teaching 'Employability Skills' during PSHCE, form time and assembly, will enable students to make informed choices and gain further information about what is available to them post-education.
In Year 11 and 12, after exams in the summer, students will have the chance to attend a work experience placement week. This occurs in a place of work of their choice where they experience real-life working days. It can encourage them in their studies, inform future decisions, enhance their CV and build their confidence and self-esteem. Placements can be arranged by family, friends and contacts or through the school.
In Key Stage 5 (Year 12 & 13), further support and guidance will be offered during PSHCE, form time and assembly, through a programme of work around 'employability'. The 'progressive study of work' aims to take the students on a journey, similar to that of finding and applying for Post-16/18 work. This includes learning about different, relevant industries and related internships, apprenticeships and graduate schemes. Pupils will identify their strengths, areas of development and their top skill sets, to be able to ‘sell themselves’ and write a cover letter and CV for their chosen job. Practice and advice for honing interview skills are offered, with pupils having the chance to attend face-to-face mock interviews. 1-2-1 advice is also available to them during their time in the 6th Form.
The ‘Careers Hub’ in the secondary library area is a place where all students can go to gain information on internships, apprenticeships, post University work and ‘all things careers’.
There will be events held during the year, allowing the students to hear specialists from different industries speak about their work and the chance for questions. Work with the BRCC (British Romanian Chamber of Commerce) or the AmCham (American Chamber of Commerce in Romania) will also provide great opportunities and events and help strengthen existing relationships.
